What's Happening
- Ogeal Halfacre Webster, widow of W. Clyde Webster, Extension Cumberland District area specialist, has written a book, GROWING UP ON THE CUMBERLAND RIVER. The book covers the history and memories of growing up on their 119 acre farm in Holleman's Bend two miles from the little steamboat town of Granville.
In her case, the saying "You can't go home again" is true. We cannot go back to the house, barns, the hills and the river bottoms. In 1973 the water from the Cordell Hull Dam covered the land along the Cumberland. Webster's book recalls the early settlers, the pleasures of childhood, farm life, dining and recipes, commerce, riverboats, the walk to school every day and the army's love of the Granville area's terrain for World War II maneuvers. She will jog your memories and hopefully cause you to write some of your own to preserve your family's heritage and values.
The 211 page book is self published. You may obtain a copy by sending a check for $15.00 (includes postage) to the author.

- Nancy Curtis, who retired as Extension agent II doing 4-H work in Roane County in 2004 with over 30 years of service, is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Nancy needs and has asked for our prayers. We hope for the best for this couple who would like to hear from their friends and associates. - Margot Emery, UTIA Marketing and Communications, has passed along a letter from retiree Dabney Wellford, who now lives in Cordova, Tennessee. After UTIA retirement, Dabney operates a poultry and cattle farm.
Here are some quotes from his letter: “I had Horace Smith for one or two classes and many other faculty members that I remember fondly. Webster Pendergrass was my freshman advisor, Dr. Peacock was the ag college dean and Dr. Eric Winters was head of the Agronomy Department. Frank Bell was the best teacher I ever had at any level. I think he lived and breathed his subject. Lloyd Seatz I especially enjoyed. Ed Lidvall took our animal judging team on a memorable trip to the University of Kentucky.”
Thanks, Dabney, for helping many of us remember our college days.
