TITLE:
Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tennessee


DESCRIPTION:

The Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine is the chief executive officer and academic leader of the college. The Dean is responsible for ensuring the college’s excellence in education, research, service, and outreach. Additionally, the Dean is responsible for all matters relating to the administration of the College including academic programs, faculty, staff, students, alumni, facilities, resources, budgets, fund raising, and relationships with the university, local community, and the State of Tennessee. The Dean reports to the Vice President of Agriculture and serves on the Institute of Agriculture Executive Committee and the University of Tennessee Knoxville Dean’s Council, representing the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Dean is expected to provide leadership, vision, and energy that will sustain and further enhance the College as one of the top colleges of veterinary medicine in the nation and the world. The Dean is responsible for cultivating and fostering an environment of scholarly excellence that produces high quality research and teaching programs and promotes outstanding patient care.  The Dean is responsible for College strategic planning and implementation.  The Dean is responsible for communications and engagement with external constituents, including organized urban and rural veterinary medicine, agricultural commodity groups, and the State Legislature.  The Dean will provide creative leadership and momentum in a manner that builds the University’s, Legislature’s, and public’s confidence in the college.  The College seeks a proven leader who will aggressively promote continued development of its academic programs, research productivity, and national and international reputation of excellence, built upon a commitment to accessibility and diversity.


QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate for the position of Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine must have:

  • A minimum of an earned D.V.M. degree, or a recognized equivalent (e.g., BVSC, VMD, DMV).
  • A track record of leadership and excellence in scholarly activity, education, service, and administration
  • A strong appreciation for the importance of veterinary medicine in public health
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated success in managing and leading a complex academic or business organization
  • Demonstrated ability to create, promote and support a diverse collegiate community of faculty, staff and students


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate for the position of Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine would preferably have:

  • A track record of managing finances and experience in fundraising
  • Eligibility for tenure in a CVM department at the level of full professor
  • An advanced degree or board certification in an AVMA recognized specialty


EFFECTIVE DATE:

The position will be available July 1, 2008. Review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until an acceptable candidate has been chosen.
