Foundations of Marketing

What is Marketing?

Marketing is the process of:

  • Identifying the current and emerging educational issues and needs of our clientele.
  • Creating educational programs to meet those issues and needs, consistent with the mission of UT Extension.
  • Creating an awareness of our organization, its capabilities and the impact of its programs.
  • Developing constructive relationships with all relevant stakeholders.

Marketing is an integral part of the program planning process. Marketing creates awareness of our organization's diverse capabilities and demonstrates the value of our educational contributions. An effective marketing effort creates, maintains and enhances constructive relationships with people who can influence our future.

Marketing includes:

  • A team effort involving administrators, faculty and staff, volunteer leaders and supporters.
  • Becoming aware of the major forces and trends that affect our audiences and the entire staff.
  • Planning and implementing relevant, timely programs that are based on identifiable needs of target audiences.
  • Understanding that a positive, consistent organizational image inevitably depends on high-quality programs and effective staff.
  • Communicating the organization's image consistently and effectively to decision makers, existing and potential clientele, the media and the general public.
  • Communicating impacts and results to appropriate clientele and decision makers.
