UT To Host Tobacco and Alternative Crops Field Day |
|
|
SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (May 24, 2004) — The University of Tennessee is
sponsoring a field day about raising tobacco and alternative crops on
Tuesday, July 13, from 6:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CDT, at the Highland Rim
Experiment Station.
The field day will feature high-yielding and disease-resistant tobacco
varieties. Researchers will provide new information about nitrogen rates
and tobacco yield and quality. Other topics of interest to be discussed
include late-season spotting diseases in dark tobacco and insect management tools.
Dr. Bob Miller, tobacco breeder, will discuss new advances in burley and dark variety tobacco development. A presentation about the latest information on tobacco buyout legislation will be given by Dr. Kelly Tiller, a researcher with UT's Agricultural Policy Analysis Center. New research into alternative commodities will also be covered. These commodities include tomato and cucumber production in a tobacco float beds and blueberries, grapes and other small fruits.
This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
The field day site is located approximately 25 miles north of Nashville on Oakland Road in Springfield. The Highland Rim Experiment Station is one of 11 branch research units in the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station system.
