The University of Tennessee Plateau Research and Education Center in Crossville will host its annual Steak and Potatoes Field Day on Tuesday August 1, 2006. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and the program will begin at 8:30. The program will conclude at 2:30 p.m. and includes a sponsored lunch. Experts from the University of Tennessee will present short seminars on topics of interest to cattle producers and fruit and vegetable growers. In particular, beef cattle producers should be interested in hearing about selecting livestock-handling facilities, news about the state's agricultural enhancement funds, alternative feed for cattle, coping with higher fertilizer costs, breeding soundness evaluations of bulls, and beef quality assurance (BQA). Fruit and vegetable production topics to be covered include greenhouse production systems, bramble production, marketing and budgets, vegetable variety recommendations, and edamame (soybean) production for Tennessee. Experts will also be on hand to explore topics related to appropriate and safe use of prescribed fires and establishing and maintaining wildlife food plots. The UT Plateau Research and Education Center is located west of Crossville on U.S. Highway 70 North. A map is available online at http://plateau.tennessee.edu. The Center is one of ten research and educational facilities operated by the UT Agricultural Experiment Station statewide.
