Controlling the bottom line – that's what is on the agenda for an upcoming beef cattle price risk management workshop conducted by University of Tennessee and University of Georgia Extension specialists. Producers are invited to attend any one of four events this month across the state. Buying on a high market and later selling on a much lower market can be devastating to the bottom line. Emmit Rawls, UT Extension livestock specialist says, "With the increased volatility in prices for feeder cattle and finished cattle, producers are at significant risk, especially those who buy stocker calves or yearlings." The workshop will be of greatest use to those who stocker/background 60 to 70 calves or those who are retaining ownership to a feedlot for later sale as finished cattle. The information will also be of great interest to anyone desiring to learn more about how the futures and options markets work. With the sharp rise in grain cost, producers need to also learn how to manage feed cost in order to have better control over their bottom line, Rawls says. Four different centers will host one-day events, each held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.:
There is no registration fee, but pre-registration is required to provide the educational materials and noon meal. For registration information contact your local county UT Extension agent or Emmit Rawls at (800) 345-0561. The workshops are presented under a grant from the Southern Region Risk
Management Education Center with additional support from UT Extension and
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. This material is
