(KNOXVILLE, Tenn.) – The UT Institute of Agriculture’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) has appointed Anna Filipek as Program Coordinator for Recruitment. In her new role, Filipek will work to develop programs and activities aimed at attracting some of the best students to the College. Her recruitment activities include school visitations and development of recruitment materials and events.

Filipek brings an enthusiasm for students as well as an impressive and diverse experience to her new position at the College. “I really, truly care about the students I recruit,” Filipek said when asked about her relationships with new students. According to Filipek, student recruitment can also be a family affair; “They have a really strong relationship with their parents so you have to recruit both the students and the parents.”

In addition to an agricultural background, which includes growing up on a horse farm, Filipek has also worked in the development and marketing of a number of successful student affairs initiatives at the University of South Florida in Tampa. When asked what skills she brings to her new position, Filipek said, “I think I’m unique in that I bring a combination of experience in both marketing and student affairs. I have a background in agriculture but I can also bring an outsider’s perspective.”

CASNR continues to place a strong emphasis on attracting the best students and Filipek will play a
vital role in recruiting them. Her efforts will help provide assistance in the sometimes-daunting
application process and help prospective students meet all application deadlines. She also plans to
balance technology with face-to-face interaction to appeal to Millennial students and oversee the development of a new prospective student web site. Filipek hopes to break old stereotypes by
focusing on the career opportunities for CASNR majors. “We’re trying to expand on what people
think of in terms of agriculture and that will be my primary goal.”

In addition to her recruitment activities, Filipek supervises the CASNR Ambassadors, a student recruitment group. She also acts as the liaison to 4-H, UT Extension, and the UT Knoxville Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Filipek earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Education degree, with an emphasis on college student affairs, from the University of South Florida.

In addition to the programs of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the UT Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research and public service through the UT College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station's system of ten research and education centers and UT Extension offices in every county in the state.
