Cost share programs and best management practices for cattle operations will headline the topics to be discussed at the 2008 Beef and Forage Field Day. The event is being held on June 12 on the grounds of the University of Tennessee East Tennessee Research and Education Center - Blount Unit.

Activities will begin with a trade show at 7:30 a.m.

Mike McElroy, district conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will present a keynote presentation on current opportunities for beef cattle producers to enhance their operations.  Two key programs he will discuss include the NRCS cost share program and best management practices recommended by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.  Following the keynote presentation participants will assemble into groups to attend morning sessions that address switchgrass as a potential biofuel as well as forage, using bio-solids on pastures and hay fields, and watering systems for cattle. Time will be available for all participants to attend each session as well as to visit trade exhibits.

A sponsored lunch will be served at noon for those who pre-register.  Pre-registrations are encouraged by June 6.  Contact your county UT Extension office or call the East Tennessee Research and Education Center at (865) 974-7201.

Following lunch, participants may attend a 45-minute session that will focus on adding value to feeder cattle with process verification programs for age and source.  The event will conclude at 2:00 p.m.

For a second consecutive year, a youth program on beef cattle production will be presented by members of the faculty of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The sessions will feature technical presentations as well as discussions of opportunities available to youth interested in careers related to agriculture and natural resources. Proper academic preparation for college will be covered.

Pre-registrations are encouraged by June 6. Contact your local county UT Extension office or call the East Tennessee Research and Education Center at (865) 974-7201.
