UT AgResearch Steak and Potatoes Production Event:
Seminars to be offered for cattle producers, fruit and veggie growers and landowners

Tuesday, August 5, is the date for the annual Steak and Potatoes Field Day at the University of Tennessee Plateau AgResearch and Education Center in Crossville. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. CDT, with the program running from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. A sponsored lunch will be provided.

New this year is a special Pesticide Recertification Session. Limited seating is available. For priority seating, please call 931-484-0034. A $15 fee is required, payable at the door.

Throughout the event experts from the University of Tennessee will present short seminars on topics of interest to cattle producers; fruit and vegetable growers; and landowners interested in managing their forests. In particular, beef cattle producers should be interested in discussions on managing the bull, cattle welfare, animal nutrition, and production of winter/summer annuals. Two afternoon sessions scheduled this year are controlling vegetation, weed identification in ponds, and livestock watering systems.

On tap for the fruit and vegetable production talks are a vegetable production tour and tasting and talks on grape production, weed control, wildlife control in blueberries, and the Tennessee Farm Fresh program.

The topics to be discussed on the landowner and management tour are hardwood management, particularly regarding storms, energy from wood, wildlife food plots, and establishing native warm-season grasses. The Plateau AgResearch and Education Center is located just west of Crossville on U.S. Highway 70 North. A map is available online at http://plateau.tennessee.edu.

The Center is one of ten research and educational facilities operated by the UT AgResearch program statewide.
