William D. Bishop Outstanding Service Award
Award Description This award, presented in memory of Dean Emeritus William D. Bishop, recognizes a member of the field force of the Agricultural Extension Service who has contributed most to the attainment of the objectives of Extension. Dr. Bishop served with the Extension Service for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 1977. Mrs. Azlena Bishop, wife of the late Dr. Bishop, presented the award. Citation Beth Bell, this year’s honoree, is now in her 25th year of service to the University of Tennessee Extension. Concerned about the problem of obesity in Tennessee, she organized the “Walk Across Tennessee” project in Dyersburg. Recruiting 67 teams, which is 567 walkers, they hoofed it for good health for more than 60,000 miles. Bell is a leader in the “Broken Promises” program, where Extension helps clientele to get on a spending plan and climb out from under mountains of consumer debt. She also is a leader in an exciting new program called “Tennessee Saves.” This program encourages the people of our state to put money away for emergencies and for retirement.
