Cavender Award for Best Publication

Award Description

Established by Dutch and Marilee Cavender, former Director of Communications, this award recognizes excellence in the development of published material produced by professionals in the Institute of Agriculture. These co-winners were chosen from all peer-reviewed publications produced by units of University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and printed by UT.

Citations

There were co-winners this year. The first group, Dr. Larry Steckel and Greg Breeden co-authored a publication entitled “2004 Weed Control Manual For Tennessee.” Judges commented that this useful and practical guide for controlling weeds is a must-have for Tennessee row crop farmers. Dr. Steckel and Mr. Breeden also distributed this vital information in three formats – paper, CD-Rom and the Internet.

The second group of winners for the Cavendar Award was Dr. Tom Hill, Dr. Larry Wilson and Alan Galloway This group received the award for their publication entitled “Economic Opportunities with Freshwater Prawn in Tennessee.”

Judges commented that the publication was well-organized and well-written and the perfect guide for a potential shrimp producer to learn about this emerging enterprise. Judges also said the publication was well-illustrated and provides a great deal of information in an area where little material has been available in the past.
