Award Description
This award, named for William T. Miles, a respected medical doctor, was established by his son, the late Curtis W. Miles, a long-time devotee of the Field Trials at the Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tennessee. In accordance with the younger Miles’ life philosophy, “Treat people like you want to be treated,” the award is intended to recognize significant contributions and service to the Knoxville community.
Citation
Dr. Dwight Loveday, the 2004 award winner, has served as a Blount County 4-H volunteer leader for 20 years, with his major efforts concentrating on the sheep and swine project groups. His greatest contribution has been the revitalization of the swine project in the smoky mountain district where swine exhibits have increased nearly tenfold in less than six years.
Dwight has planned and implemented sheep and swine educational programs, as well as assisted 4H’ers in purchasing sheep and swine. These programs allow 4H’ers to do a better job in raising and caring for their animals. In his community, he has opened his sheep farm to assist others and provided expertise to the Blount County Farm Bureau’s Farm Day.
Loveday is an active member of his church and serves on the board of directors of the Tennessee Sheep Producers Association, and is described is a model example of someone who makes a significant contribution in service to their community.
