Mildred Pendergrass Award for
Outstanding Service

Award Description

This award, presented in memory of Mildred Pendergrass, wife of the former Vice President for Agriculture, Webster Pendergrass, is given to employees among the technical, skill and service staff in the Institute. Presented by Dr. Klindt along with Mrs. Betty Eliassen, the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Webster Pendergrass.

Citation

Barbara Gillespie is the 2004 winner of the Mildred Pendergrass award Described by faculty as committed to excellence in all that she does, Gillespie has served as a Senior Research Assistant for the University of Tennessee since 1984 in the Department of Animal Science.

Gillespie has been foundational in the training of students in molecular biology, hematology, and microbiology techniques. She has also been involved in designing, conducting and analyzing experiments, and was instrumental in establishing a number of hormone testing procedures that are still in use in laboratories today.

Gillespie has authored and co-authored more than 50 scientific publications and has been described by her colleagues as an outstanding member of the technical staff of UT Institute of Agriculture.
