Citation

The 2004 winner of this award, Dr. Clark Garland, has spent his entire professional career with University of Tennessee Extension and serving the farmers of Tennessee.

Born on a row crop and dairy farm in Jackson County, Garland has been at the University of Tennessee nearly four decades. Garland started at the university in the 1960's as a graduate student, served as a professor in agricultural economics and resource development, and for the past two decades has served as the coordinator and leader of the MANAGE program.

The MANAGE program has helped thousands of Tennessee families in the financial and professional management of their farming operations, and has been repeatedly recognized over the years as one of the strongest and most effective in the nation. Garland’s efforts were especially critical in the farm crisis of the 1980's, and carry the same significance today.
