Cavender Award for Best Publication
Award Description Established by Dutch and Marilee Cavender, former Director of Communications, this award recognizes excellence in the development of published material produced by professionals in the Institute of Agriculture. These co-winners were chosen from all peer-reviewed publications produced by units of University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and printed by UT. Citations This year we have co-winners. The first is Dr. Jim Neel. The beef industry is Tennessee’s leading agricultural enterprise – a 400 million dollar a year business. Dr Neel is one of the state’s leading experts on beef, and the primary coordinator of a publication titled “The Tennessee Master Beef Producer Manual.” Judges commented that this is the most comprehensive publication for beef production ever in Tennessee, and it has been well-received among producers in its first year. Judges also said the material is well-illustrated, uses clear language and is well-referenced – with input from some 21 different experts. The second winner of the Cavendar Award is Dr. Craig Harper. Dr. Harper is the author and primary photographer for an Extension publication titled “Growing and Managing Successful Food Plots for Wildlife in the Mid-South.” The judges said this publication shows a great deal of originality, and is comprehensive, and well organized and written. The judges commented that the photography was especially impressive, and used well to illustrate the manual’s most important points. This publication provides information where little material was available in past years.
