Vernon and Ida Darter Award

Award Description

This award, named for the late Extension Dean Emeritus Vernon W. Darter and his wife, the late Ida Darter, recognizes excellence among the ranks of Associate Extension Agents.

Citation

Wayne Key, the winner of this award, began his career with Extension in 1994, and has spent the past decade developing effective and worthwhile 4-H programs in Putnam County and throughout the Cumberland region.

He is a cattleman himself, and his knowledge in livestock has enabled him to lead hundreds of youth in 4-H animal science projects.His 4-H’ers develop their leadership skills through his careful planning in beef and sheep projects - where local participation has grown significantly in recent times.He is a major supporter and contributor to 4-H Clover Bowl – an academic contest for kids where they learn about Tennessee.

He is also recognized for his work in the On My Own program – where youth learn the importance of saving money, and developing critical financial skills needed in adulthood. He is regarded as an outstanding educator by his clientele and peers, and always has a positive and cooperative spirit.
