Lewis H. Dickson Extension Award
for Innovative Programming

Award Description

This award will recognize the contributions of Extension professionals and is established to honor the contributions of an outstanding Extension educator. Dr. Lewis H. Dickson was employed by the University of Tennessee from 1946 to 1988, when he retried as Professor in Agricultural and Extension Education. This award was established by his son, Lewis H. Dickson, Jr., in October 2003.

Citation

Jeff Smith is the 2005 winner of the Dickson Award. He has served as the Extension agent responsible for agricultural programs in Dickson County since 1991. He is recognized by co-workers and clientele’ for innovative educational programs in tobacco, forestry and beef cattle production.

In particular, he is honored today with this award for implementing the UT Ultimate Heifer Program in a 13-county area in middle Tennessee. The program strives for consistency and excellence in the quality of beef production – and getting producers a good price for their cattle. Through this man’s excellent work, the program meant an increase in quality, uniformity and value to area cattle herds. Active in his community and church, this agent does an outstanding job every day he goes to work.
