Citation

Michael Smith, our first honoree has been with Extension for more than 20 years, with service in McMinn, Davidson and now Williamson Counties. Current duties include 4-H and adult Ag, but it is his work with the Williamson County Master Gardener program that has drawn particular praise. Williamson has the largest and most active Master Gardener program in the state, and it is under this man’s excellent leadership. In recent years, our honoree has trained more than 500 Master Gardeners, and their combined service to the community has topped more than an estimated quarter of a million dollars.

John Wilson, our second award winner has been with Extension since 1988, when he joined the staff in Grundy County. He moved to Marion County in the early 90's - where currently he is responsible for both adult and youth agriculture programs and resource development projects. His work with the Marion County Livestock Association is especially noteworthy here, and he has s served for many years on the Livestock board. He is regarded as an effective communicator and authority on forages – and is frequently called upon to present educational seminars on beef production. His is known for his beef herd management expertise, and his efforts in forage programs and computerized record-keeping help Marion County producers stay profitable. John is well-respected in his community, and praised for his many hours of service to the Chamber of Commerce, the local Forestry Association – and he is credited by local officials for his work in reviving the Marion County Fair.

Larry Moorehead, our third honoree is well respected by the people of Moore County – where he has served the past 28 years. He is known as an agent who cares about the community, and is a friend to the farmer. Moore County producers say this man is a vital and valuable resource to the community, and only a smile and a helping hand away. He is especially praised for his livestock and forage work in the state’s biggest cattle feeding county. Larry works extensively with the local Livestock Association, Farm Bureau, and he helped to organize the Moore County Horseman’s Association. In addition, this man is known for his love of 4-H. He helps to run a county weekend camp, and in 2006 the event celebrates its 50th year.
